Sylvia Plath

Nine Female Figures (1950-51)

“My photo: I before
I was I, or a book”
—Robert Lowell
Notebook (1967-68)

Cats—with nine lives
Sylvia with nine—different faces
Just eyebrows—and a single eye
At first in the—collage background

Then a pair of breasts—some squiggly
Lines maybe legs—then closer
Her face sketched—in pink and orange
Layered in tempera—quilting girl

Finally—her portrait in yellow
Split down the middle—along her nose
Red and blue dashes—two others
Already she’s into—double divas
