Sylvia Plath

Two Women Reading (1950-51)

“make the happening seem
natural, or a marvel on the
impossibility of them”
—Sylvia Plath, My Memory Book

Again—the doubling divas
Reading books—while all around
A surrealist movie—of fragments
Shapes of buildings—half-done

A blue vase—on a picnic tablecloth
Refracting one lady’s—leg blue-green
Her bouffant—half-beige and dotted
Zebra chic—the multiple-layered lawns

Two women reading—surreal books
The pages blank—yellow and pale pink
But that’s not—what they’re reading
The Text—is décolleté of the double
